🌿 Event – Wednesday 6th August 2025🌿
Our members joined Glasgow CND’s commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at 11:30am on Wednesday 6th August in the Botanic Gardens Glasgow at the new peace garden ( 📍 located near the pond, just before the Kibble Palace).
Then followed the formal launch of the Lord Provost’s Peace Garden by Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren, with the Consul General of Japan, the Friends of the Botanic Gardens and Glasgow CND.
About the Peace Garden
In this 80th year since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Peace Education Scotland is teaming up with the Lord Provost’s office and the Botanic Gardens to create a lasting symbol of peace – a Peace Garden led by children and inspired by hope. 🌿
Already, 50 local primary pupils have learned about ginkgo saplings grown from seeds that survived Hiroshima – a living reminder of resilience and the global call for peace from the Mayors for Peace initiative.
This special garden will feature poetry, art, stories, and ceramic cranes, all created by local children through workshops with professional poets, artists and potters. It’s about planting the seeds of peace in the next generation.
How You Can Help
We are seeking your support – you can donate via this Crowdfunding Appeal to make it happen. Help is needed to purchase materials, to pay expenses and to pay for the tutors needed for the activities. We need £2200 but please give what you can. Please help us build a space that celebrates discussion over division, creativity over conflict. Donate today – Let’s grow peace together.
Resources for schools about Hiroshima
Peace Education Scotland has produced a module to help teachers discuss this event and stimulate discussions about nuclear weapons. Nuclear Weapons: Yes or No” is aimed at late primary to early secondary school pupils. All of the booklets can be downloaded as PDFs from our Resources page – and the module which includes Hiroshima can be downloaded here: The Nuclear Weapons Debate
Please browse our website for many other related resources include ‘Morality’ (PDF and Video) examining the moral, ethical and legal arguments surrounding the possession and use of Nuclear Weapons and ‘Survivors Stories‘ which includes deeply moving video testimonies by ‘Hibakusha’ – survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.
