The Nuclear Weapons Debate

This is the first of four units in the series Nuclear Weapons: Yes or No, introducing upper primary and early secondary pupils to the core arguments on both sides of the nuclear weapons debate.

The four units are: The Nuclear Weapons Debate, Nuclear Explosions, Trident and Pressure Groups. Each unit is based around a core workbook, while video and further challenges can be selected at the teacher’s discretion to add depth and width to the core booklet’s topic.

The booklets and links can be downloaded here:

The unit is structured around five themes – Check, Watch, Learn, Think and Challenge – which together can be covered in a single lesson, with the core sections delivering facts about nuclear history and exercises to develop critical thinking about nuclear issues, arguments and viewpoints.

The unit’s central Challenge is a structured class debate on nuclear weapons, with two additional debate challenges focusing on the atomic bomb in World War II and the Cold War. A PowerPoint presentation and printable booklet are both included, and can be used together or individually.
